Equine-Assisted Therapy

Equine Assisted Therapy is a form of experiential therapy where individuals work with horses alongside a trained professional to support self-awareness, emotional regulation, and personal growth.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, this approach allows you to learn through experience, connection, and real-time feedback—all in a calm, outdoor environment.

If you’ve ever wondered what Equine Assisted Therapy is or how working with horses can complement psychological support, you’re not alone. This hands-on approach to therapy is increasingly being used across Alberta as a valuable experiential tool.

Why Are Horses Included in Therapy?

Horses are incredibly intuitive animals, responding to human body language, emotions, and energy/intention in real time.

In Equine Assisted therapy, horses can:

  • Reflect what you’re experiencing

  • Respond to your communication style

  • Provide insight into patterns in behaviour and relationships

Horses don’t judge or overthink—they respond in the moment. This helps to create a safe and supportive space to reflect on areas such as anxiety, confidence, boundaries, and trust.

For some people, equine-assisted therapy can feel more natural and approachable than traditional talk therapy. It can be used as an experiential, adjunctive therapy to support self-awareness, emotional regulation, and personal growth.

What Happens During an Equine Therapy Session?

Each session at Instep Equine is personalized to support individual reflection and engagement. No prior horse experience is required to participate.

Sessions may include:

  • Observing horse behaviour

  • Grooming and connecting with a horse

  • Groundwork (leading or interacting with the horse from the ground)

  • Mindfulness and grounding exercises

  • Natural horsemanship activities

  • Guided reflection and conversation

Riding is not the focus. Instead, sessions provide opportunities to explore emotional awareness, personal growth, and confidence in a supportive environment.

Common Techniques Used in Equine Assisted Therapy

Equine-assisted therapy emphasizes experiential learning, allowing you to explore and reflect through hands-on interaction rather than solely talking.

Key techniques may include:

✔ Groundwork
Supports communication, leadership, and trust through interaction with the horse.

✔ Mindfulness & Body Awareness
Encourages noticing how your emotions and physical state influence your environment.

✔ Observation
Watching horses interact can support reflection on your own relationships and behaviors.

✔ Experiential Learning
Real-time experiences provide opportunities to engage with challenges and learn skills in the moment.

✔ Reflection & Processing
Discuss what arises during the session and explore how it might apply to daily life.

Who is Equine Assisted Therapy For?

Equine-assisted therapy can support a wide range of individuals, including children, youth, and adults.

It can be used to explore and reflect on areas such as:

  • Anxiety and stress

  • Depression

  • Trauma

  • Self-esteem and confidence

  • Emotional regulation

  • Relationship challenges

  • Personal growth and life transitions

Equine-assisted therapy can complement traditional talk therapy and provide opportunities to reflect on patterns you may not notice on your own, as well as practice new ways of responding in a non-judgemental and supportive environment.
